There have been many deaths and injuries caused by distracted driving, including deaths of police officers. But cops have also been responsible for deaths caused by their own distracted driving, like the CHP officer in CA a couple of years ago that killed a 15 year old. LEOs are not immune to distracted driving as discussed in
this newspaper article from Fort Collins, CO for example.
Just what special training do cops get across the US and Canada and what rules do they have for use of computers, cellphones and other electronics? And do they get treated differently when there are deaths or injuries attributable to them? Is it a double standard for cops and is it the wrong message for all the other drivers?
I think cellphone use and texting in vehicles while driving should be banned completely (cops notwithstanding) and lockout devices should be installed (the technology exists) but doubt that would ever happen due to lobbying from the phone manufacturers.
