N/ew? hitch camera

in my Cabelas catalog they show a New hopkins smart hitch camera on sale for 99.99. that plugs into the existing tow wiring with a 3.5 " color monitor. seems like a good solution to that issue.

Rear View Safety has a wireless hitch cam for $175 it looks like they have a wifi one for a little less, but it seems to be out of stock

this one would certainly be easier to install and you could move the camera from back of TV to back of RV. but I think I read that the hopkins one would do other things, sound warnings, etc.??

Yes it sounds as you get close

  • just heard back from Hopkins:
It is compatible with the Toyota but may not be plug and play. Worst case scenario, you would have to hard wire it in. This requires one wire be spliced into your reverse circuit and the other to ground. Instructions for this are included with the kit and can also be found on our website by searching for the 50002 part number at www.hopkinstowingsolutions.com.
It needs reverse circuit and ground. why couldn't I get a standard 7 pin plug and use those two contacts in it?

  • thanks, that evidently was the connector that had a proprietary type of connector, not the one that went into the 7 pin. haven't looked closely at my 7 pin yet but I "assume" it is a standard one, along with a 4 connector fitting. I was sort of hoping it was "wireless" however.

so is $99 a good price? if it has been around a good while, I am curious as to why it hasn't been mentioned when questions arise on rear cameras?

Pretty good. Northern tool has it for $120.00. Super easy to install. You just remove your tag. Slide the unit behind it, and tighten the tag back down. For power. It has a "T" connector. You simply unplug the 7 pin from the back side. Install the "T". Then just run the video cable to the place you want to mount the camera. You get 17' of cable. so it will go just about any where you want it to. I can see no reason it would not work on any vehicle that has a 7 pin. UNLESS the 7 pin on Toyotas are made different than most others. Which is possible. May be one solid piece. In which case. the instructions say to splice into the reverse light wire near the taillight for vehicles not listed. that hardware is included as well.

I have the Hopkins Smart hitch. #50002

Also I posted about a few months ago. I had one for a few years in my past truck. So when I traded I got another one. But after a couple weeks the "hitch lines" went out, and the monitor distorted. I contacted them, and they sent me not one, but 2 new units. And told me to keep both, just in case. It was in fact the sending unit under the tag that went bad. I am VERY pleased both with the camera, and with their service.
  • central tractor wanted $140, amazon $126 so 99 is great. it said that this would NOT fit my tacoma or highlander and one of the Q&A said it had a proprietary connector. since the one in Cabelas plugs into standard trailer hookup, maybe it is an "improved" unit?
