I will be calling DMV tomorrow. That should be quick and productive. :S

When you register the RV in NC, you will pay taxes on it like you do your car.

I assume it has. The dealership has sent me another P.O. sheet. It shows $2000 on the sales tax line.

We purchased our Motorhome in New Jersey, we live in Georgia. The salesman at the dealership told us since we are financing the MH, they would charge us GA sales tax and give us a check for the sales tax amount made out to our local Tax Commissioner. When we registered it in GA, we handed them the check.

The salesman told us if we were paying cash, they wouldn't charge us the sales tax and that we'd have to pay the tax when we went to register it in GA.

Every state is going to be different.

Many states have a transit permit or similar temporary registration. The way it's always worked for me when purchasing a vehicle out of state is to get the transit permit (usually a nominal charge with no sales/use tax--when I got my motorhome in New Hampshire it was either $10 or $20), drive the vehicle to the home state with the signed-over title, bill of sale, odometer statement, and whatever other paperwork is needed, and then patronize the home state Department of Motor Vehicles and pay the tax, title, and registration fees.

Not all states offer a temporary registration of some sort. Massachusetts, in particular, neither offers one nor recognizes them from out of state for their residents. The alternative, though it is much more hassle, is to get the title and bill of sale and whatnot from the state you're buying from, bring them back (without the vehicle) to your home state, get the title and registration, and then return with the newly issued title to drive the vehicle home.

Of course, you do (generally) need to have insurance coverage whenever you drive the vehicle, even with a temporary registration.

Calling your DMV will be your best bet. Here in WI, when we bought our 2011 Montana (in Indiana) back then we didn't pay any sales tax in Indiana, we paid sales tax on it when we registered it in Wisconsin.

Take out of state delivery and pay the tax at home. Even if there was reciprocy the tax in the purchase state could be higher and you wont get it back. We just bought in Az and took out of state delivery because Nv has no recprocy with Az and Az tax is higher than ours. The check we have to write will be plenty big enough and dont want to shell out any extra.

I just bought a Class A in FL and I paid the SC sales tax rate.

Purchased in VA. Paid no sales tax to VA. Paid sales tax to MD my home state when I registered RV
