You have to make sure that they are level. When we first got our camper we didn't bother leveling them properly and they bent near where they are attached to camper, hinge area. The result was that when camping in order to close the door the step angle was horrible. Lesson learn. I was able to use a clamp and bend them back. While home just doing camper chores we use the fold out stairs at the bathroom entrance. For trips, I will use various blocks to make sure it is level and I can close the door, and not bend them again.
And yes, there is a pile of dirt when you swing them in.
I think I would prefer pull out on the main entrance. Haven't seen an easy way to switch to them. The bathroom door has something to mount them to, the main entrance does not.
