New Wrangler owner with ?'s

We just brought home our new 2016 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited and I have a couple of questions about the flat tow procedure in the owners manual. I've been practicing the procedure in my driveway but am having difficulty shifting the transfer case into neutral and back into 2 Hi. It's very stiff, particularly going from neutral back to 2 Hi. Is this normal, or is it just because it's new and needs to be moved a few times?

Also, since the new Jeeps don't lock the steering wheel when towing, do you remove the key completely when towing?

I'd also appreciate any tips that you Wrangler owners have for a "newbie" to the Jeep crowd.

Oh yeah, one other thing. I'm going to have Stay-in-Play installed. For those who have one, where was the unit installed? I found a video on YouTube that placed it over the battery on the passenger side of engine compartment.

    I believe the transfer case shift cable is held in place by a plastic clip and there have been reports of the clips breaking when the handle is forced from one position to another. Has never happened to me but I don't doubt it could happen.


    This is a fairly common problem. You can look it up on www.jeepforum.com or other Jeep forums. It has never happened to me, and I have never talked with anyone who has had the problem. I did crawl under my Jeep and eyeball the clip, because the transfer case can be shifted out of neutral from underneath in case of failure.

    When we have trouble, we just put the transfer case in 4L from neutral. Seems to go in easier. When ready to pull out, we move it a few feet in 4L and shift to 2H there. Works pretty well.

    To unhook, my 2016 owners manual says to turn ignition switch to ON/ RUN, but do NOT start the engine before moving transfer case to desired position. THE ENGINE SHOULD REMAIN OFF BEFORE SHIFTING TRANSFER CASE OUT OF NEUTRAL TO PREVENT GEAR CLASHING.

    I'll try dsteinman's suggestion of starting the engine, then turn it off and try the transfer case again.

    When shifting back after towing, I find it necessary to
    put my left foot on the ground to move the jeep to allow
    it to return to 2H. This procedure is not needed except on
    flat ground.

    We have a manual transmission.
    To unhook, I pull the emergency break, unhook, then start the engine and shift into 2WD.
    When hooking up, with the engine running, I shift into N, put the jeep in 5th, pull the emergency brake, then turn the engine off. (we release the brake when doing the final check, which includes pulling the keys.)

    You said your in your drive. If your on a angle its harder. If you roll it a little it goes in and out better.

    Keys out on mine.

    Worst thing about a Jeep is the wave.

    I used the M&G brake. tuff getting in but works great.
