If they were in the heat ducts they had a runway to the heat exchanger… cleaning the duct (heating or cooling) that had mice can be difficult to impossible… but the best way I know to do it is to fish a cord through it then tie cleaning rags to the middle of the cord pulling the cleaning rags back and forth in the duct… the best way to inspect the damage and cleaning is to become friendly with a plumber that has a camera that can be run in the duct…
