I don't know which rental company she's using but I've looked at the deals from El Monty and Cruise America myself. The renter saves greatly on the nightly rental cost if they can work their vacation to fit the timeline, point of origin, and destination into the trip. Renter pays gas because it's still a rental but at a reduced daily rate. There should be sufficient daily miles to make the trip not counting side trips. I would do the math on that beforehand.
It depends on the route but some have enough time built in to enjoy sight seeing. Yes, she should check what happens if there is a break down but it should be the same as if any other rental breaks.
