I am not yet retired nor do I have an RV at this point but I always made reservations. I am a planner (obnoxiously so at times) and didn't want the unpleasant surprise of not having a place to stay nor the stress of trying to find one at the end of a long day. Even though one may plan a short-mileage day any unforeseen issue (traffic, problem with tv/unit, etc) can turn a short day into a long day. At some point when I AM retired and don't have a schedule it may change. I also don't believe in using parking lots or rest areas. I bought an RV to enjoy it, to enjoy the company of other campers and to be able to get out and stretch my legs by walking after driving. Does it cost me? Absolutely. It's just part of the cost IMHO.
