Travel days I would boondock at whatever is convenient near wherever I am when I get too tired to drive - Walmart, rest stop, truck stop, etc. I am not at my destination, I just need some downtime overnight. And, that's why I have a self-contained RV.

That changes things. We did a road trip last year in a classic car, so I was very particular about overnight stops & parking locations. On the way back we did not have a set stops agenda, although we had a general idea about how many miles we would cover and where we would stop that night. We had no problem finding daily lodging which met my picky criteria.
I suspect you could do something similar - make reservations on a day-by-day basis. The Internet is a marvelous thing for finding options. And if your target area comes up dry, it sounds like you are flexible enough to go a few miles in a different direction if that is where an open campground spot is. Worst case you are self-contained and could stay at any wide spot in the road. I think that would be a rare exception and not the rule.
Just some thoughts...
