I ran into a new phenomenon last fall camping in Yosemite. There are young people that are out all day in their cars driving around. They must go out to dinner. They show up at dark only to sleep and leave early in the morning. They are sleepers not campers.
There is another group we called the "night Germans." They have foreign cars and wear Adidas track suits. They only are there at night. We got a "gutten morgen" out of them and they were gone.
A lot of people in both groups show up in the dark and set up their tents with the use of their headlights. They were relatively quiet, but the headlights are annoying. I have never seen this level of popularity of sleeping but not camping.
You think this is new?
For many people (including us alot of the time), it is all about visiting the destination and exploring, not sitting in a chair by our camper amid a mass of humanity 10 feet away listening to their music, or generator, or watching their dogs poop all over, or...... The campsite is temporary and brief accomodations only. Sometimes we will enjoy some extra time at the campsite, especially at some of the more scenic, secluded, and less populated forest service locations or boondocking, but usually it is about the activities/point of interest.
I am not suprised in the least regarding the "night Germans" as you call them. Do you really think they came all this way to sit at a campground??
