Seems to me the obvious would have been to confront the mother and tell her that bringing a 12 year old boy into a women's bathroom or restroom is completely out of line. We can all guess at the number of reasons to do so, but the bottom line is, none of the excuses are good enough to bring a 12 year old boy into a ladys bathhouse. Period.
