The nostalgia behind the "motorcycle wave" originated with the 1969 movie "Easy Rider". IT IS STRICTLY A MOTORCYCLE RIDER-TO-RIDER "THING!" It's amazing the concept has continued 45 years later.
Motorcyclists are a different breed with a different mind-set than camping families.
MC riders waving at/to each other originated *LONG* before 1969..:S
"Shaggers" always waved at each other in the 50's.
Many "camping families" have been taking their MCs and/or ATVs in the pickup or Toy Hauler - to the destination where they "camp" for a lot of years...:S
And (BTW) - since the OP is in So. CA - I'll have to disagree with which riders wave -to whom - and which ones don't.
Harley riders usually don't wave to crotch rocket riders and vice versa.
Street rider & Desert racer since 1960. (No more racing now).
RVs since 1970 - never paid attention to who might have waved.
Maybe out in the boonies - but pretty tough on a busy freeway to see what the driver in an RV going the opposite direction 6 lanes over is doing behind the wheel..:R
If you have time to look - you're an accident waiting to happen!
