No tension in awning spring

i replaced (2) springs in my awning in 2015
they broke someplace in the length of spring, not on the end where you would think you could repair it
when i took the old one out, they were all rusted,
and there was some dirt and rust in the roller tube
pushed some rags thru to clean it out
after getting it all back together, and rolling it in and out a few times
i took a marker and marked spots on the bottom of the rolled up tube on each end
and then drilled a 1/4" hole at each spot
this way any water/rain/car wash , that gets in the tube, has a way out
