Tension knob on awning arm

Ok I have a 2012 Jayco jay flight with an 18' Carefree awning. When loosing up the tension knob it unscrewed all the way and the knob came off as well as the washer thing that holds it in. How do you get it back in place when you can't reach into the arm to hold the washer thing in place? We finally got it back in position but it took a good 30 minutes of fighting.
  • Don't know if yours is the same, mine has the inner and outer main arms, they are about 2 inches wide and an inch thick, the lower slides inside the upper that is attached to the roller. The other one by one square tube with the locking knob slides up and down in very small tracks on the upper arm. Look real close at the lower end of the small track, there is a small screw in each side. Take them out, then the arms come apart and the lock nut for the tension knob can be replaced.
  • skipnchar---I had a professional company come out and install the awning--just got it last week--However on my lat camper there was nothing to "lock" it either. Is there such a thing? Seems to me like there should be to prevent this from happening. But from the posts I see I am not the only one that this has happened to! Thanks everyone
    !!
  • I"m guessing that the keeper that prevents this from happening was either int installed or has been lost for some reason. What you did SHOULDLN'T be possible when put together correctly.

When that happened to me I took the bottom of the arm off the trailer attachment and then the inside piece fell out. It was easy to start the knob and then slide the whole thing into place.

  • Did the inside threaded part disappear down the arm? That happened to me once...I could see the darn thing and even move it, but I could NOT get it to stay in place so I could get the knob bolt into it.

What I finally used to fish/hold it back into position was good ol' duct tape. I stuck a sticky-side-out wad on a stick and jammed the threaded "washer" against the inside lip of the arm long enough to let me get the threading started.

I sure am more careful now as to how much I unscrew that puppy!

  • Just had to deal with this issue. I tightened the knob too tight and it started to turn inside the plastic knob. I had to cut off the plastic with a dremel to replace the whole knob an screw. I used a needle nose pliers to hold the plate in position to allow for turning in the screw into the plate. reminder don't tighten the tension too much or it will strip the screw inside the plasic knob.
  • This happened to me last year, with about the same amount of time to figure out how to fix it. I sure learned my lesson about loosening it more than necessary. Haven't done it since. I don't recall how I managed to get it back in, but I remember it was aggravating.
