There was talk that the gov would 'require' all drones sold after Jan 1 to must be registered and then be given a number to affix to their drone. And if caught without the number on the drone the owner would be charged a hefty fine. I do believe that this passed.

My wife gave me a quadcopter for Christmas. :B :C Even though it is below the half pound weight I got my registration number from the FAA online. Cost was $5 which was then credited back to my credit card. I am not sure when the "free" period ends or maybe it has already ended.
