Used to follow the blog of a family of 3 in a converted VW van doing the Pan-American Highway. With 3 of them and no onboard bathroom, in Latin America, there were no campgrounds and they could often get a hotel room (with secure place to park in cities) for $10/n.
In the US/Canada with an RV that has working facilities, it just doesn't make a lot of sense outside unusual situations like a break down.
