I don't think there has been a time since the late 1920's when at least one manufacturer of small folding tent trailers was not in business. Most people using them don't get there by downsizing, they are stepping up from pitching a tent, which is still the most popular way of camping at the campgrounds I frequent.

My brother & sister in law have one that they pull with a 3 wheeled Can-Am Spider. They love it.

Nothing new about that setup. We traveled through 24 states, Canada and Mexico on a Gold Wing and a Timeout camp trailer (looked exactly as the first picture). My wife rode a 550 Honda full dress. Did that for 3 or 4 years.
