In New England, it's about the peak of the foliage season, and quite possibly the busiest weekend of the year for accommodations...or at least right up there with Labor Day and Memorial Day and July 4th.

It's gonna be an experience. Oh I forgot a big factor, we travel with 2 border collies. Are the park trails open to dogs ? We will put all your intel into our trip .

Hi Jackfate, that's my favorite time of year in Acadia. We always wait to go after the majority of tourists have gone home. In particular, favorite campground is Smuggler's Den in Southwest Harbor. Still part of Acadia Nat'l park, but located on what they refer to as the "quiet side". Check them out on the web. Usually not packed full.

The toughest time to be without reservations will be around the Columbus Day weekend. If you're still in the area then, I would seriously consider reservations for that weekend. Otherwise, you'll probably be OK. Keep in mind that most campgrounds in the New England states start closing up around October 15 or so. If you have a self-contained RV, then usually they'll let you stay while they start winterizing bath, shower & laundry areas first.

Suggestions: If you like the coast and a choice of great restaurants & seafood, then it's hard to beat the SouthEast part of the state. For camping, I'd recommend Libby's Oceanside Camping in York, ME. Probably one of the most expensive RV parks on the East Coast, and darn well worth it. Nice people too. Depending upon when you arrive, it might be a bit crowded and tight, they do maximize their real estate. If we head up that way in the Fall, we usually shoot for the end of the Columbus Day week. Things are quieting down in the area.

The Marginal Way in Ogunquit is about a 15 minute drive north and consists of a 1 mile walkway along the coast, with great restaurants at either end. Some of our personal favorites are Barnacle Billy's in Perkins Cove, Me.

There are several campgrounds in the York/Ogunquit/Wells area. We just spent last weekend at Sea-Vu Campground in Wells, ME. Not quite the same view as Libby's, but your rig doesn't get covered with sea spray either! LOL :) Again, a nice, well maintained, family run campground.

We don't have too much experience much further north.
