I get that you think it's just a funny joke played on those "young ones", but you do realize that if that young one doesn't catch their mistake, they get written up for a short till? You also realize that purposely trying to fluster a clerk when it's busy is making it much more likely that they'll make another mistake in the next 10 minutes? You do realize that many of these young ones actually need that job?
I'm sorry for knocking your fun, but I still remember the time some guy came in and did that - I ended up $50 short in my till. When I got called into the manager's office and he told me I was short, I was able to recall the exact moment it happened. I had never been short before or after. But I felt sick when it happened to me. So forgive me for not thinking your joke is in good taste - it just really isn't funny to the clerk. I was lucky, I worked for a quality company that didn't make me reimburse the $50 - that $50 was 1-1/2 days of work (gross) for me.
