As to messing with some clerks....
Please remember that they had to buy smarter cash registers so that the young ones can make change.
If you hit them with one of these pretty good comments, they think YOU are the idiot.
Adding to that,
Often times I'll mess with a younger clerk & I'll ask if they can change a
$20
Yes sir, we can do that.... OK then, as I'm handing them the $20, I want 5-ones's & 4-fives
Yes, I have gotten back $25 on a few occasions. :S
PS: It works best if they're really busy.
No offense, but as someone who worked retail for 9 years, what you are describing is a scam. You are purposely misleading the clerk, when they are at their busiest, in order to get them to screw up the change. While your "purpose" may be to just have a little fun at the clerk's expense, people do this exact thing every day to rip off the store.
And, it isn't just the "young ones" who get screwed up - it's ALL the clerks (including those ultra smart old ones), that's why it's such a popular scam.
I will second that, and if I am behind you in a busy line, the "humor" really wouldn't be appreciated. And what will happen when a plain-clothed police officer hears you try to pull it some day? You may wind up in trouble!
