I remember the first time our shower started to fill and not drain when the Grey water tank was full. Since then, I have dredded the black tank, for the reasons you mention.
Make sure you use a bleach-containing cleaner to prevent any nasties from getting started due to contamination. If you're concerned, maybe use an ozone generator/air cleaner to help keep anything out of the air.

No matter what happens, I always try to make light of it. No point in getting angry as it never helps. I did cut loose a few choice words though, when I saw the black river on my floor. I contained it quickly and it didn't get far.
