According to industry experts, he’s wasting his time.
I read the article, and maybe some are wasting time, at the same time that a trucker thumps the tires he is looking at the air cans and also takes a peak at the slack adjusters, marker lamps , mud flaps any oil coming from the center bearings, the brake hose and a general condition of the rig or if a platform the chains or straps and condition of the tarps and restrains, cargo in general, ETC.
When I thump my tires I have the engine running, the lights on the emergency flashers on and I look to see that the windows are closed, the bins are closed and locked, the steps in, that the tow bar and related equipment is all hooked and in order, so if that is wasting my time, bring it on, I will waste as much time as I feel I need to be safe.
At the beginning of every day when the tires are cold I check the pressure, that way I know that I start the day with he correct pressure Then I thump the tires when we make pit stop or meal stop, and yes I can tell when one tire is about 3 to 5 pounds off.
