It is not the thumper that is he problem for law enforcement, it is the location of the thumper in the cabin, under the seat or any where that it can be grabbed out of sight of a person standing out side the vehicle, depending on where the hammer is located in the cabin it can and will be taken as a weapon by LEOs, if it is handy and near the driver of the vehicle.
Taking the kids to baseball is not a problem unless the parent has the bat under the seat or handy next to him, that will really get the officers attention real quick specially if it is sawed off.
In years past a simple traffic stop was just that, today with so many nuts out there you approach each and every vehicle with a lot of caution you never know when they are going to do something stupid, you always have your hand on the gun and you watch the rear view mirrors and the individuals, that is why some times you request backup, specially if there is more than one individual in the vehicle.
