I say it's worth it.... When activated you can ask for directions, they can unlock your door. I was flying out of Dulles once and couldn't remember if my doors were locked. No time to go back so called Onstar and they verified that they were locked. Yes the 911 always works but if you crash on some old back road and it's not activated it's not calling 911 for you. The satellite phone is a nice backup when your phone goes dead or no signal too!!

When I was on my free period I used it. Each month you get a report on things like oil life, tire pressure etc. You can lock and unlock the doors remotely and start the vehicle.

Onstar uses the cellphone system. They stayed with the analog system long after the digital systems were operating because they had a much longer range. Then, all of a sudden they switched to digital and rendered useless all those produced from the beginning thru about 2004.

Imagine the fate of the poor driver who was on their side on the side of the road... (Rollover) ON-Star got their location via GPS, called me, I swung a remote camera around and layed eyes on and sent troopers.. On-star was able to tell me they were not seriously hurt (Some burns from the bomb blowing up in their faces is all) (What bomb.. the air bag of course).

Yup, that happened.

Travel a lot and wife feels that it is a must have. You can negotiate the fees. Renewed ours for $159.06 that included all taxes and fees. Received 4 months additional at no charge for a total of 16 months. We allow our Sirius to lapse and after a couple of months they send a letter reducing the cost by greater than half with no reactivation fee.

OnStar is great and very handy if you live in an area with no cell phone reception. We canceled ours after the free trial.

I have been able to summon assistance in areas where I had no cell reception, and I have used it for diagnostics issues (check engine light). Push a button and ask what the issue is and they will identify the problem and tell you if it is safe to keep on driving. They will even put you in touch with the nearest GM dealer, if required. The other advantages of having ONSTAR have been well documents above, so I won't try to sell you on it, other than to say I have it on two vehicles and plan to keep it.

My dog locks me out all the time. I keep a spare key hidden under the car. Cheaper then on-star.

For us it was a life saver...we had pulled into a truck stop to fuel up. Both dogs were in the truck...DH outside ready to fuel, I started to walk into the store to have the pump started.

As I walked away I heard the tell tale "click" of the door lock...looked back to see our little Poodle mix with her front paws on the door happily wagging her tail. She had stepped on the door lock...both cells phones and all keys were in the truck...PANIC time!
