Onan KY 4000 Microquiet Intermittent Problems

Took my KY 4000 apart and cleaned the slip rings.

Now I can only get AC by removing the voltage regulator and connecting it externally from the case (flex in P4-J4 connectors?). I also did make sure the pins were spread enough to make good contact and used CRC spray.

Strangely enough if I put it back in its seat bolted down and connected internally it will then put AC out.

Is there some solder joint on the VR side in epoxy that is known to go bad?
  • Intermittent problems are always hard to track down. If I were you I would ask Onan that same question. You might want to probe around on the regulator while it is running monitoring the voltage at the same time. You might get lucky. I am a professional Electronic Troubleshooter and that is how I would approach it. You may call me if you wish.
