Though there was no big bang this has happened to me... and others.

Brushed up against the stove controls and accidentally turned on a burner.
Since the RV cooktop is not an "Auto-light" type... Gas escaped.

Nose detected and valve closed no boom.

HOWEVER.. It is written: Smoking can kill you.. Imagine that due to smoking the nose is disabled, does not smell well (Do a good job of smelling things) and I go to light up my next cancer stick KA-BOOM.

Reason not even on the list WHY I do not smoke.. but it is a good reason.

This was a propane explosion, the owner probably came home an d opened the door with a cigarette lit and bang, I saw what was left of a house after a small amount of natural gas went off, the owner got home after dark, opened the door turned the light on and the living room blew, the roof wen up twisted 3 feet up, front door and owner blown past front lawn half way on street, small burn on left hand and arm, the door protected the owner from the shock wave.

The rest of the house blew towards the rear ripping walls apart.

The owner of the camper is lucky that he was not inside the unit he would not have survived.

Great. I just threw a gas worker off my property, today. She was beating on my gas meter piping with a hammer. I called the gas company, Centerpoint Energy and after three conversations with CS people, finally got through to midlevel management. They said they would send somebody out but no show. I was told they would investigate and talk with the employee. I've checked the meter and pipes for leaks and didn't find any.
Still, there are folks that don't know or are complacent about flammable gas. Not this cowboy.

Propane has a rotten egg smell almost anyone would recognize Maybe he was cooking meth.

LPG (propane) has no smell. An additive, usually mercaptan is added to make the smell. Last year there was a recall on some LPG that was being sold without the odorant.

I find this hard to believe. From the looks of that rig the pressure alone would have at least blown out his eardrums, an injury onlookers may not immediately recognize. Still, to be alive at all is extremely lucky.
  • WOW ... from the looks of it the thing exploded from the inside out. I agree with the article suggesting a propane leak. Nasty stuff when it wants to blow.

The passenger who was inside the camper must be part cat with 9 lives.
