Why, when a topic comes up people don't like and don't want to participate in, want to have it closed down? Why not just ignore it and never read it again and let the people that do want to discuss do...

To answer the question of why some people react to things they do not like.
Have you heard the expression "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."
Some topics, views, statements are seen as evil by some people. They see themselves as good men so they feel they must do something, be it a comment, ask for deletions, request a closing, or ridicule the participants.
I too feel some things are evil and will speak against them when I can, like a manger on public property. I hope most people do the same, although the result can lead to disagreements.
