Why, when a topic comes up people don't like and don't want to participate in, want to have it closed down? Why not just ignore it and never read it again and let the people that do want to discuss do...

IMHO it's the same reason continue to argue vehemently by coming up with reasons / excuse / situations where they MIGHT be right, even after being proven wrong.
I'm sure you've all seen the "What do you mean it's illegal? I've been doing it for years, no problem!" type arguments.
