Open question to everyone...

Why, when a topic comes up people don't like and don't want to participate in, want to have it closed down? Why not just ignore it and never read it again and let the people that do want to discuss do just that?
Jim
P.S. Yes, I really want to know!

  • I open and read every one in the "Newest" category and check every now and then on Around the Campfire. Most of the time, I find a topic not interesting to me. I may follow it along, out of curiosity to see if it develops into something I might be able to contribute. But every now and there, there are some posts that are so technical, filled with numbers and technical jargon, I am left scratching my head. Those I never go back to.

I am of the philosophy that the only "dumb" question is the one never asked. If someone takes the time to post something, it's important to them, regardless of how I feel about it, even if it's asked on the wrong forum topic or if it's been asked ten thousand times before. To the poster it's important.

As I've said before on these forums, we are all guests here. We should never forget that.

I'm not sure this is even a valid question as I've never seen that happen. I only read the posts that interest me as I'm sure is the case for 99% of the other members. I can't, for the life of me, see where anyone would do what your claiming.

There are other forums I go on that you can discuss anything you like, including Politics, and religion, there are of course limitations.
I think here there seems to be more of an effort to avoid heated discussions and arguments, to the extent of disallowing discussions of certain topics.
As far as people wanting to close a discussion, I think it's more of a Moderator thing than poster thing.
There are a lot of thread that I don't even open by looking at the title, because I don't think I have anything to contribute. There are those that will open a thread just to agitate, not to contribute, unfortunate.
  • Same reason they post that subject is in wrong section.

    Wannabe moderators :H
  • Must be one of those PC things. Like a manger at Christmas where non catholics want it removed because it does not align with their way of thinking and it offends them.
  • Good question. If I'm not interested in a post, I ignore it.
I don't request that it be closed. Apparently some people don't feel the same?
