Keep in mind, also, that no see ums can very easily come in through your screens if you keep a window open. They are worse than mosquitoes, deer flies and rattlesnakes!!

You didn't spend any time with the 24th Infantry Division or at FT Stewart, did you? The Avon Skin-So-Soft was the repellent of choice and the joke was that the division went to the field smelling like a French bordello. I guess they couldn't get hold of an unscented version...

Put a fan on outside and use Avon Skin-So-Soft Bug Guard Plus Expedition Insect Repellent Unscented

NO-SEEUM, nats, sand fleas and other names we wont mention. They are terrible in south west Fl. I have also had them along the coast in Mississippi and Pensacola areas.
I have used clear nail polish on the bites to help with the itch.

Yep, those are the dread no-see-ums.

The calm evening is what got you; if you'd had some wind they wouldn't have been able to fly.

Get some Avon Skin-So-Soft Bath Oil, just the plain old bath oil, and smear it on all exposed skin before you go outside. You'll smell pretty strange but it does work.

Try going through Marine Corps boot camp at Paris Island SC. It is very enjoyable when they take you out in the sand pit and have you do some "exercises" just to stir up the sand fleas. And then you stand at attention and let them feed on you since you destroyed their little houses. And don't even think about killing one of them. You really don't want to go through the burial process.

Are you near water, (within 2 miles) such as the ocean, or backwaters?

They are very commonly found in mangroves.
