You are dead wrong my friend unless they have moved that section of SR12 since last Friday morning. The sign that warns of the upcoming "18 percent grade next 4 miles with tight curves" is precisely what and where I described.
While I was way too busy safely transiting this section of SR12 to take any photos I did find a nice shot on line. Go to: www.dreamyourride.com/2014/10/utah-state-route-12.html
and look at the second shot which was taken at the top of the grade in question. As you can see from this shot the road drops off the chart on both sides as well as just ahead before dropping all the way down to Escalante State Park.
While this section is clearly the most challenging, dangerous stretch of all of SR12 there is also an additional stretch a few miles up the road that is marked as 14 percent grade. The climb up and over from Torrey to Boulder is steep and tight but nothing like the section we are discussing.
