Southern Utah

Looking for a place to take the family and the dog for a few days in Southern Utah. We have already done the big NP (zion, brice, ect). A few years ago we went to Kent's lake and really enjoyed it. Looking for out of the way places (don't want to be around a bunch of people). Prefer site with full hook ups but not required. Any suggestions are welcome.
Thank you in advance.

Near Cedar city is Cedar Breaks National Monument

At over 10,000 feet in elevation, the monument rests on top of the Colorado plateau. Millions of years of sedimentation, uplift, and erosion have carved out this giant amphitheater that spans some three miles and is more than 2000 feet deep.

Any time is a good time to visit Cedar Breaks. Spring welcomes back the wildlife. Summer flowers are beautiful and come in a variety of colors. Fall is filled with aspens turning bright colors of red, orange, and yellow.Winter is great for playing in the snow. Ranger-led activities and special events happen throughout the year.

    Point Supreme Campground
Camping is available from mid-June to mid-September. Note that the campground opening and closing dates may be slightly earlier or later and is subject to favorable weather. Call (435) 586-9451 or (435) 586-0787 for more details and to confirm opening and closing dates.
  • We've driven Rt.12 5 times in our 34' Class'A' with no problem. There is one section, about a 3/4 of a mile long just past Calf Creek St.Pk. thats a bit steep. Very doable.
  • Love Capitol Reef NP! Going back for 4th time this Fall. Lots of hiking of all levels and good drives - Hwy 12 (Escalante Staircase) is great for TV or toad but do not recommend with RV (and let's not start that discussion on this thread as it has been discussed many times before if you check Search). Just beautiful.

Check www.LaurenBarbara.com and the Wanderings link on the left and go to Utah and National Parks.
  • You're Full hookup requirement is pretty much gonna force you to be among lots of campers parked close to u'r rig. If you'd rather 'Camp' with water only, our favorite place in S.Utah is on Route 12 north of Bryce. Its a little State pk. CG called Calf's Creek. Its nestled at the bottom of the canyon along a crystal clear trout stream. Altho the entrance sign recommends 25' on shorter RV's, We've gotten into sites with our old 34' Class 'A'several times. Its 1st come 1st serve. Our 2nd best favorite is a Nat'l forest CG just west of Bryce on Rt.12 called Red Canyon. Its very near the natural tunnel u drive thru. Again water only but big rig friendly. Sites are spaced well apart with plenty of foliage for privacy.
  • Have you been to Capital Reef NP. Gorgeous campground, but not full hookup, just electric. Great area to explore. Some great hiking. Also Escalante Grand Staircase National Monument has some fantastic slot canyons.
Here is a nice website to explore possibilities.

  • It is worth checking out some of the area state parks. Dead Horse Point is one of my favorites - Electric only, Goblin Valley State park (and nearby Little Horse Canyon) is another interesting place to visit (dry camping, but bathrooms with showers) or Kodachrome Basin State Park (some full hookup sites).
  • You might try Escalante UT, there are a lot of Slot Canyons to explore. And a lot of other interesting areas, include a lot of 4WD trails and ghost towns. There are a couple of FHU campgrounds in town. We spent 8 days there a couple of years ago and had plenty to do. I'm not sure what you mean by a bunch of people but the town is quite small and once you are out in the country side you won't see many people.
