I am not saying that the light person is right, or being real nice is going to be easy, but the goal is to get the lights shut down, isn't it?
This is exactly what I was going to say. I don't like lights when I camp either but, by handling it in the way you did you made it more likely that he got mad and will turn on even more lights the next time. Making enemies never helps anything.
