Well my impression is that most traditional RV'ers are more destination oriented. Ie getting the the Natl Park or the coast etc. The "trip" is secondary, but still important, to the destination. Whereas in Overlanding there really is no destination per se. It is ALL trip.
This is how the Overlanders define it:
Overlanding is self-reliant overland travel to remote destinations where the journey is the principal goal.
