The only difference I see between the "Overlanders" and you or me is the amount of money they have before they run out and have to go home. They apparently have a LOT more than you or me, so they can go farther and longer. And the don't have responsibilities (back home) they have to attend to (like family, property, and jobs).
If I had the finances to travel around the world, I'd probably do it too. And those magazines? How many "Overlanders" are paid or sponsored by a company or corporation to do those types of travels.
Still, regardless of where the money came from, if I had an opportunity, someone wanted to sponsor me, in return I provide them my photos and my story, .... yea! I'd do it too! Sure? Why not!
Well among the ones I have met from Switzerland, Germany, the US, England and other countries it seems most spend a year, more often two at this.
As for sponsorship I have never seen any of them sponsored by any company. It's all too common now days and nothing is to be gained from it. All of the ones I have met are self funded.
When you are in the Baja it seems that every Swiss retiree is out in their overland vehicle. They often leave their trucks at a location and return to Switzerland for three months or so as they cannot be gone for an entire year and still collect their retirement benefits.
I have met many young folks doing this also and a family of Four. The young ones work hard save up their money and go...then return and go back to work as they tell it.
