I don't think anything has changed from before. You mention that there are more magazines, etc. - yet that is most likely simply because it is much easier and cheaper to publish a magazine these days (with online, blogs, self-publishing, etc.).
In your first post, you state that it is on the rise and may be the new "wave" for RVers. But, it's no different that any time in the past. Some people have always done this. Often during the couple years between high school and college. Many folks did the "hitchhiking through Europe" which is really the same thing. It's simply that with the internet, it is seen and heard of more than before.
Way before that, it was done by hopping trains or a ship.
