I like the idea alot. I've met and spoken to overlanders in Mexico and Belize several times. I like how many places those vehicles can go there are less people. When I go camping with the wife and dog I don't want to be around a bunch of people. That's the biggest change in camping over the last 20+yrs. In my opinion. Campsites are often closer together and paved and less "wild." Overlanders appeals to people who would like to backpack or tent camping away from people, but enjoy some comfort while doing it. I have tent camped all over the Rubicon trail and areas of Moab for many years. Nice to be in the wild away from the screaming children and poorly trained dogs found in many campgrounds these days.
