I always thought the terms traveling and travelers was good enough.
I have shared a drink and/or a campsite with many world travelers. However, everyone I met did it on two wheels, most of them on BMW motorcycles. No big monster vehicle required.
Well you are right many many Overlanders are on Motorcycles. Nothing about it requires a large vehicle, just one that will go virtually anywhere road or not and be pretty much self sufficient for a long period of time.
And you are also right the vast majority are on BMW's. But many are riding KTM's and Hondas and Kawasakis the last two easy to get parts for all over the world.
If that kind of thing interests you take a look at the Spring Edition of Overland Journal there is a great article about two guys crossing the Sahara on a couple of Honda XR650L's.
