it is not NEW in the USA at all
the term being coined is newer. USA uses the phrase road trip more here. road trips can be varied obviously but a road trip can be overlanding also :)
overlanding is more remote locations basically. surviving more independent while traveling vs. stopping at a convenience store in a downtown area while travelling.

Overlanding & Road Trips:
While 'overlanding' seems to be a foreign term that's fairly new to the U.S., 'road trip' is a phrase that's very much American. Is there any difference? Well, overlanding involves travel and being self sustained while camping outdoors. Road trips can also involve camping as well, but mostly revolve around hitting the highway to distant locations and either camping, staying in a hotel, or with a friend/family member. Road trips are more of a spontaneous event where you grab a few things, jump in the vehicle, and go. Overlanding is more planned out and prepared carrying much more equipment and supplies for remote locations and maybe a longer trip period.
PEOPLE DO this in the USA now :) :)
you are trying to make something that is here already NEW and it is not.
even full time RV'ers who have the TIME travel the back roads more and find the remote locations to explore. others have 1 or 2 weeks to cram in fun on vacation and prefer the straight drive method to their destination.
If I had 8 months free time to travel the USA I can say I am on a long fun remote road trip :) and be just as correct as saying I am 'overlanding' HA
old timers ain't threatened, they see the post for what it is, not new in any way :) just a 'new word' added to what is already being done.
overlanding is Aussie term. overlanding cattle very very long distances thru no towns...total remote locations. just a word. I am not hauling cattle, is anyone else who is overlanding? nope, the term got changed into something else. just as 'the USA road trip' can be overlanding also. So if overlanding came from hauling cattle thru remote Australia, what is so new about it at all? just a new definition for traveling without the cattle :)

those pics, you don't need fancy tanks to overland or have a road trip :)
you can do it in a van or on a motorcycle.
It is not new as an alternative type of rv'ing. it can be for every day folks in the US and it is. overlanding is more like at least a few months on the road. but you can overland a week long trip also.

I don't know why you are making this sound so 'important as 'wow overlanding!' when it truly is not, heck that is how I see it. Your mileage may vary.
