Be careful with poison. Some rats can eat it and crawl into the most difficult place to get to and die then stink to high heaven. Prefer traps.
Agree! When we moved to our current home, it had a lot of mice in the garage. DH decided to poison them, and put bait everywhere. At least one of the dying mice crawled into our Kia's engine compartment or under the dash, and died. We searched, but never could find the body. It stunk so bad we couldn't drive it. Tried all sorts of things to rid the car of the dead-mouse smell. Tried for a year... Car STILL had a faint odor. It was so bad we eventually traded the car in for a better smelling car!
I am not a fan of poison at all, even before the dead-mouse-in-the-car incident. It is too easy for the poison to kill animals that weren't targeted. Secondary animals CAN die from eating dead animals that ingested the poison.
