Does anybody know what it is like to come up on someone stopped in the roadway with no brake lights on? You don't realize that the idiot is stopped until you are on top of them or in this case underneath them because they are sitting there with out the brakes on, NO STOP LIGHTS lite up!
You can't depend on brake lights. They are a warning device. You still have to look out for objects in the road.
O.K.
Try coming around a blind corner to find a stopped motorhome in your path!
Happened on the road coming out to Tofino/Ucluelet. Some tourists in a Class C rental stopped right around the corner on a blind curve to admire some wildlife. No flashers, no cones/flares/triangles/flagger to warn approaching traffic. Driver of the first car around the corner mats the brake pedal and stops with something like an inch to spare. Pick-up behind her also mats pedal but can't stop in time. Pick-up behind HIM: same thing. Result: small car converted to a sub-compact between MH and 2 pick-ups. NO injuries, though.
Now, RCMP officer gets on scene. Normally he would be ticketing everyone except the MH driver for following too close (and yes, I've seen chain-reaction accidents of this nature result in tickets to everyone except the lead driver); however, in this case, he takes one look at the pile-up and immediately tickets the MH driver for stopping on a blind corner!!
Moral of the story: Not always is the lead vehicle in a rear-ender accident clear of fault. Sometimes it is the boneheadedness of the lead driver that causes the accident.
Cheers!
Mike
