parts cost, a rant and a question

It finally happened. The drain plug to the water heater broke off. Extracting the nylon plug was easy enough, now online to to find a replacement. a 2-pack is 5.85, a little steep but I will then have a spare. Shipping and handling, 17.50. Well kiss my grits. So, why can't I go to the local hardware store and buy a brass 1/2" threaded pipe cap and be done, about 1.65 I think?

  • I use a standard CPVC pipe plug available at most hardware and home improvement stores for around 50 cents. My current CPVC plug has been in use since 2008.

Aren`t those a standard stocked item at any RV store?
Probably, but I'm 20 miles from one and my schedule is tight so it's worth my while to have them shipped. But thanks for your suggestion.
  • Saw a 2 pack for as low as $8 (free ship).
    or
Any RV dealer's parts dept..walk in (no ship) if you have one locally. Probably around $5 for a 2 pack.

Do not use a brass plug...Water heater tanks cost more than nylon plugs.

Mine has no anode rod. The exit pipe and collar is zinc, so no problem there either.
  • do you a Wallmart around? They stock some basics, an Anode Rod/plug for sure, no shipping, yes you can use something from the hardware store, threads must match perfectly....
