Pay for parts up front?

Mostly done so after you order it you don't find it cheaper somewhere else and leave them hanging with an awning they can't get rid of. Chances of finding it less expensive elsewhere is pretty high.

Having been in the RV maintenance and repair business I can assure you that the shop has a very legitimate reason for wanting some form of financial assurance up front. You would be stunned if you could see how many people go in someplace and order and then for whatever reason decide to do their ordering business and fix somewhere else. While you are not their banker they as well did not take you to raise. Paying the full price is somewhat unusual but a non refundable deposit of some percentage, say 25 to 50% is not out of the question.
My response to a refusal to provide a deposit for the ordering of something that I would not normally have in stock would be a request for you to take your business elsewhere.

What good is a check that isn't signed?? It's worth nothing. They can't cash it or get anything for it. Total waste of time. Just give them the money but make sure when the part comes in it's what you ordered. They don't want to order something and get stuck with it if you don't pick it up.

What I get from this post is a bunch of customers that do not trust anybody. Pay for the parts with your credit card and if it don't work DISPUTE THE CHARGES.

What sort of security is that? Put another way, how does that prevent you from skipping town and leaving the business owner with a (presumably non-returnable or not trivially returnable) special order on their hands? An unsigned cheque is not negotiable, nor a guarantee that the funds are actually in the account. It's just a little slip of paper with an account and routing number on it that you cannot legally use without the signature.

Many, possibly most, businesses require payment up front for special order parts or supplies. I've never had any qualms about paying that for a reputable business. If they aren't a reputable shop, I'd rather not do any business with them regardless.

CW replaced the fabric on my big awning about a year and a half ago. Ordered based on my measurements; called when it came in and I took the trailer to them; installed correctly; paid for when I picked it up.

This was the CW in Winter Garden, FL.

Yeah, I'd find another shop to do the work. Unless you KNOW the particular service departments reputation. Overall CW has a poor reputation of fixing things right or in a timely manner.

Love or hate Camping World this sounds relatively typical of a custom order. Without knowing how custom or returnable this awning is the attitude seems a little aggressive based on SOP for custom orders from anyone.
