Pay showers

We have been campers for many years. Until this year, we only found pay showers at state and national parks. Lately, however, it seems that we are running into many private campgrounds charging us... usually $3.50 to $4.00 to start, for 10-12 minutes. In these cases we just use our trailer shower, and keep our money. We are often charged $40.+ per night, and are being asked for more. Is this a new trend or have I been lucky enough to just not run into this in the past? Just wanted to know what you all have found.

I have only found pay showers at truck stops and one county park I've been known to stay at.. Was a real nice park the first time I was there but then they got popular and upppppppppped their price, and put Nick-O-Locks on the showers.

    (Brand name of device)

Of course, I do have the one in the back of the RV.. Bit more work (Since I use that bathroom for storage) but.. Worth it when you need it.
  • Sounds like the "campgrounds" you're staying at are really RV Parks :)
  • I've thought of using my outside rinser. Same pressure as inside but needs a longer hose and shower head. I keep hearing about outside showers so why not. Give the neighbors a show but then again probably wouldn't be appreciated, even in swim trunks.
I've been in a few campground showers. Ones in Michigan County park were spotless but others there ain't no way free or a twenty dollar bill.
    :)
  • I am willing to pay for a clean shower at an affordable price. 25 cents for a certain amount of time. My shower is small and not comfortable. And a campground shower is great when you don't have sewage. If a place is charging $3.50 for a shower, and for 10 mins, I may pass on the place.
  • I mostly see the pay showers at campgrounds where there are a lot of tenters or backpackers.
  • All the state CGs in WI have free showers. Most of the county CGs I have been to in the last 10 years have free showers also. Most have been upgraded in recent years and many have private shower rooms now. Pay showers used to be pretty common in private CGs here but I think a lot of them are doing free showers now days. When we've traveled cross country and stayed at privates it was more common to have free showers than have to pay.
  • I don't know of any State or Federal campgrounds around here that have showers.
But then, I have not been in ALL of them.
To me, the whole idea of having a self-contained RV is so that I do NOT have to go to potentially disease ridden public showers.
  • Haven't seen it here on the east coast.

It must be new, but not good.

Its been the flipside for me... Michigan's state parks have free showers, although sometimes they are gross.

In Canada, I've stayed at several parks that charged for showers, but also plenty of private parks that offered free showers.

If I'm staying somewhere and paying for full hookups, I too would expect showers to be included... like you, I just use my own cramped shower and keep the money, shower until my 6gal of hot water is depleted.
