I just went through an appeal of my personal property tax on the 2013 F150 ECO. I am still pissed but nothing I can do about it. Check your State / County laws you may be getting screwed like I did! Here is what happened. Purchased truck in 12/2013 ( NC Title ).
When I got my personal property tax bill for they upcoming year, which had to be paid to get my permanent tags, the value was based on the sales price but did not give credit for 7750 in rebates. The truck was valued at 7750 more than I actually paid. ( In NC State law says on new vehicles the local tax office must value at the sales price ). I argued that I paid 7750 less than the valuation. The answer was " we do not give credit for rebates in valuation ". I was furious and appealed to the review board. They denied my appeal. I can still appeal to the State DOR who oversees the local tax offices. I have talked personally with a State Revenue officer two times and am now convinced I would not win that further appeal, only spend more money driving to Raleigh for a hearing and then get denied. He told me he could see my point but they do not give credit for rebates because " not everyone has good credit and will qualify for the full rebates so they do not consider them in value ". So I am paying PP tax on a value about 8000 more than I actually paid for the truck. Still pisses me off to think about it.
My point to you is, don't assume the dealer made an error or is committing fraud. Laws vary from place to place. I would never have believed I would have a new truck with a tax value 20% more than I actually paid for it. Trust me the Gov't is looking for ways to screw you and you can do nothing about it!! I hope your is a mistake and will be corrected but don't count on it.
Not sure what part of nc you are in, but we live in the county and not any city limits. The $8000 difference would mean about $40/year for us. Definitely wouldn't be worth it for us to argue over. Like I said, they overvalued my little yaris by a few thousand, but yet undervalued my wife's explorer this year by about 8 thousand. All in all for both cars and including tag fees (we opted for special tags on both of them this year) we paid about $250-275. Life is good. Motorhome is coming up. I'm expecting about $400 on it.
