OP here. Thanks for all your feedback. Lots of varied opinions here but thought I would clarify on some comments asked:
1)Our trip is for 3 weeks in the US. We would use the generator on our trip and also for future camping trips in Canada and hopefully the US again. Just the DW and I (and the dog who won't qualify for her own exemption unless we dress her up) so only a total of $1600 for all goods declared
2) Would be a Yamaha or Honda, not some import brand that is not available in Canada (re the CSA issue)
3) I would not think of not declaring it, not an option for me, so just looking at what I might be paying at Canada Customs. I have not RVed in the US so just want to be prepared in any event.
I also suspect that even though I live in Alberta, I may be subject to HST if I re-enter in BC. So I will plan my route home accordingly to arrive at an Alberta crossing.
