OP here. Thanks for all your feedback. Lots of varied opinions here but thought I would clarify on some comments asked:
1)Our trip is for 3 weeks in the US. We would use the generator on our trip and also for future camping trips in Canada and hopefully the US again. Just the DW and I (and the dog who won't qualify for her own exemption unless we dress her up) so only a total of $1600 for all goods declared
2) Would be a Yamaha or Honda, not some import brand that is not available in Canada (re the CSA issue)
3) I would not think of not declaring it, not an option for me, so just looking at what I might be paying at Canada Customs. I have not RVed in the US so just want to be prepared in any event.
I also suspect that even though I live in Alberta, I may be subject to HST if I re-enter in BC. So I will plan my route home accordingly to arrive at an Alberta crossing.
If you should choose to re-enter in B.C., you will likely have to pay the HST. But IIRC, there's a form you can get at Customs that you can use to apply for a refund of that B.C. provincial tax, if you live in Alberta. Form should also be available at Service Alberta offices. Ask about it before leaving Canada, it might make your trip planning easier.
