Permanent camp site - outdoor rug edging options

I don't want the pavers sitting on top of the carpet. I would dig out a trench, use some leveling sand and set them where they are near level with the carpet edge.

I am concerned that winter weather will cause them to heave and I will have to reset every year.

Thanks for the comments. Just looking for alternatives to landscape timbers.
