Picked up my TT this weekend, Do I need air bags?

My TT has a 6000lb dry weight and 745 hitch weight. I have a blue ox WD/Sway control until installed that the dealer setup for me.

It sits pretty level, but just wondering if I could benefit from air bags? I think the rear sits a hair low, and my truck is empty in these pictures. Unloaded without a trailer there is a slightly rake.

I figure with the cap and I have a plywood deck in the back, I have roughly 300 lbs over the rear axle. Add the trailer and I am pushing over 1000 lbs on the rear suspension before I put anything back there like wood or grill.

I have heard the WD should alleviate the sag, but 1000 lbs is 1000 lbs and I don't see any half ton truck ever not sagging when loaded up.

This is the first time I have towed with a known hitch weight. When towing vehicles I have always loaded them backwards on a uhaul trailer to keep most of the weight over the trailer axles. I don't have that luxury with the TT.

What does everyone here do? Will I notice any difference in drive dynamics if I have the rear up another inch or 2 while towing? That is my biggest question. Taking it home was the first time I ever towed with something that has this much wind area. It wasn't bad, kept it at 60, but a few gusts of wind let me know it was back there. Power wise the truck was fine.

Here it is at the dealer and level ground. Looks pretty level, but no cargo or people in the truck. I would say it's a hair down in the back.

With my pop up, truck completely loaded ( estimate 400lb cargo in bed + plywood and cap)and roughly 400 lb TW on the PUP I would guess this most closely simulates current trailer.



Sits roughly 1" higher in rear no trailer and bed pretty empty. I don't see how I could ever keep the truck level without bags.

  • I have the Blue Ox Sway Pro. Blue Ox recommends that you have 4 links showing between the rotating latch and spring bar as an initial setup. From there you may need to go a link or two in either direction depending on your TT and truck combo.
  • You are not set up correct your bars should be running even with the frame you need to lift the tongue higher and get a few more blinks tighter
  • Is that a Tundra? What does the yellow sticker in the door jamb say the carrying capacity of the truck is? This is important. I believe most Tundras fall short on payload (less than 1400).

    What is the gvwr of the trailer? Dry weights mean nothing. The dry tongue weight means nothing.

    Most people load at least 1000 lbs of gear into an rv. I have 1800 in mine. This means that the tongue on the trailer if it weighs 7500 loaded will be around 1000 lbs. Ad 75 for hitch, 300 for cap plus add weight for whatever you load into the bed and passengers. I bet you are looking at around 2000 lbs loaded onto that truck. If you think it is squatting now, wait until it is loaded. Air bags do not increase payload on a truck and will not fix it. You need a bigger truck. Your first towing experience loaded will validate my claim.
