Pilot flying j issue

Traveling to Florida , I decided to use pilot flying j for gas because of the discount. I received a message from my card company that Pilot had put a 500 dollar hold on my account rendering the card non usable for several days. Pilot has no business screwing with my account. Good Sam ought to inform members that this scenario exists. I will no longer purchase gas from them because I don’t need the grief while traveling. My credit is excellent and I’m ready to tell all of the above to shove it.

When we have used Pilot/Flying J, we tell them the max we will be getting and that is what they set the pump to and use for the hold. Some of these coaches that hold 150-200 gallons could easily put 500 worth in the coach so if you don't tell them you will be using less, you can't fault them for putting that much of a hold on your card.

The hold will be gone once the actual amount charged has processed in usually two or three days. If your card only has a 500 limit on it (as you implied), it's time to upgrade!!

I was going to say that, you beat me to it. I have a 30K limit on mine, don't care of they put a 500 or even a grand hold on it.
  • When I started out full time I scheduled my gas stops for flying j. Between the insanity of just getting my coach in and out of their NOT RV friendly pump islands, forget trying to get propane all together, and being treated like **** by the register employees at 4 different station's concurrently across 4 states? I stopped going there. You can't pay me to get fuel at a flying j.

New rv'ers need to know that stopping at any gas station off the interstate that welcome trucks will give you a FAR BETTER EXPERIENCE fueling up! :c
  • I'm always surprised when people buy gas/diesel at Pilot/Flying J/Loves. Even with the discount cards, you're still paying MUCH more than the other gas stations that are usually right across the street. Often $0.30 - $0.50/gallon more. That adds up over time.

How much of a discount are you getting? At the local Pilot here in Ft. Myers, they want $3.099/gallon for diesel. Everywhere else it's $2.699 - $2.799.
  • It sounds like you may have a pretty low credit limit. Ask for an increase. 10 to 20K seems reasonable to me for a VISA card. I have never had a problem.
  • A little off topic, but I have noticed that while Flying J at one time was the cheapest diesel, it now is very often higher than the competition.

  • It's common to have a small hold put on it while fueling but that's ridiculous.

Sorry, but "Holds" are not new, pretty much ANY business can put a "hold" or "lock" your card account.

In general, holds or locks on a credit card are typically used during "Unsigned" transactions like a outside fuel pump transaction.

Larger transactions can often trigger a hold also.

In instead of a hold some gas stations will limit you to a max of $75 per transaction which means you may need to stop and swipe, stop and swipe multiple times in order to fill up.

Holds or locks can also be applied to DEBIT cards so if you use your DEBIT card you may find that your bank checking account is locked..

HERE is some information about holds and ways to avoid them..

We avoid this mess of holds or limits while traveling by using GIFT CARDS. We will buy a bunch of $100 gift cards with cash from a gas brand that we know we can find most anywhere.. When the card is done we simply throw it away.

Alternately you can use cash, but many stations now days require you to PREPAY before pumping, can be a hassle but does work. We used to exclusively pay with cash until we started running into a lot of PREPAY only stations, hence the reason we now use Gift cards..
  • Why would a five hundred dollar charge render a card unusable?

I've fuelled at PFJ countless times and never run into that.
